Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences  , having long term working and research relationships with The KIZHI museum, organized for the Arena partners  exciting  study visit to the  largest open-air museums in Russia - unique historical, cultural and natural complex  included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

We were met by professional  team of experts from  Department of natural heritage conservation and monitoring  at the Kizhi museum - Yuriy Protasov, chief expert on environmental control of immovable monuments, cultural and natural heritage, Tatyana Pavlova, head of conservation and monitoring of natural heritage Department, Roman Azarov, the chief engineer.  They explained to Arena Project partners the tasks and  activities of the department in :

• studying of the environment, inventory of natural resources and valuable natural areas, conservation of natural heritage areas
• restoration of the historic landscape area
• control of land use, environmental management and environmental compliance status of the territories,
• environmental education and outreach.

The colleagues  have also presented the results of their activities in the field of domestic and industrial waste disposal. The Department is actively involved in a number of international waste management projects.

Partners of Arena Project have studied the Ecological path of the Kizhi Island, which was established in 1994 and improved in 2006 through the republican target program Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Karelia in 2004-2010.
